Rosewood Farms was established in 2003 by brothers Paul & Robert Rose, when they settled at Rosewood Farm following ten years of nomadic pastoralism in the locality.

Rosewood Farms Kerry Hill Sheep

The all-grassland farm, in the Vale of York on the East Riding of Yorkshire border, nestles in the Lower Derwent Valley, one of the most important traditionally managed flood meadow habitats in the UK.

We take an holistic approach to management, aiming to farm in a sustainable way, both ecologically and economically. The farm is extensively managed and stocked with native British breeds of pedigree livestock.

Livestock

Our livestock are selected for traditional British livestock traits, such as their mothering abilities and excellent production qualities. This allows us to get the best out of our land by extensive methods and ensures the progression of the genetics which make this possible. Where appropriate, we also believe in the use of herbal and homeopathic remedies for the care of our animals.

Pedigree Dexter Cattle

The Rosewood herd was established in 1996, with the purchase of a single cow from the Foulrice herd in North Yorkshire. The herd now comprises red, black & dun cattle, of both short and non-short types. Our cattle spend the Spring, Summer and Autumn on the naturally grown pastures and meadows of Rosewood Farm, moved daily so that they always have fresh grass available and calving outdoors in late Spring and early Summer. They are housed in Winter, to protect our heavy wet lowland pastures, whilst eating only home grown hay and silage. Beef animals are finished on grass at 24-30 months of age, after at least two seasons at grass.

The beef from the Dexter breed is noted for being the most tasty, tender beef available. Top chefs John Burton-Race & Ed Baines proclaimed grass fed Dexter to be the best UK beef on ITV’s Britains Best Dish 2007. But more important to us is the feedback we gain from our customers, with comments such as “simply the best beef I have ever had” really making all the work worthwhile.

The small joints and first class beef from the Dexter breed suits many families well, however in order to supply larger joints the Dexters were joined in 2007 by a group of animals from the Mercaston Fold of pedigree Highland cattle, in Derbyshire, bred from some of the oldest, finest bloodlines. Pure grass fed Highland beef will be available, alongside the Dexter, from Autumn 2008.

Kerry Hill Pedigree Sheep

This, the first Kerry Hill flock in East Yorkshire, was established in 2002 with stock from the successful Oak Tree flock, in Warwickshire. The breed originates in hills surrounding the small Montgomeryshire village of Kerry, in Mid-Wales. The breed adapts so well to all situations that it is now equally at home in a multitude of environments.

Kerry Hill Lambs

Rosewood grass fed Kerry Hill lamb is lean and full of the flavours of the herbage rich natural pastures of the Lower Derwent Valley. The fine eating qualities of the breed means that Kerry Hill lamb is only usually available to a select market on a localised basis.

Ruddings Pedigree Pigs

Ruddings pedigree pigs was established in 2004 and comprises British Saddleback, Tamworth, Large Black & Gloucestershire Old Spot founding stock from Home Farm, Temple Newsam. All breeds are selected for their mothering ability, hardiness and eating qualities. The Ruddings herd is fed on a predominately home grown mixed diet and mostly housed year round in open fronted straw yards to give plenty fresh air and natural light, as well as the classic rooting behaviour they enjoy so much.

We aim to produce pork with colour, texture and a depth of flavour to equal our beef and lamb. By sourcing our feeds as close as possible to the farm we not only reduce feed miles but also maintain direct control over the ingredients we provide for our pigs.

All our animals are butchered by award winning butcher J.A. Mounfield & Son of Bubwith, a small family business just three miles away from Rosewood. In 2008 we will be opening our new on-farm butchery to allow further processing including sausages & hams, in addition to providing more flexibility for the collection and despatch of your orders.
